Sugie Bunny...Love Never Ends

Well, this is not exactly what I had in mind to write about for my Easter Post, but it seems it shall be. Please bear with me and this long post, but I feel this story needs to be told.

Yesterday afternoon I lost my precious Sugie bunny to her Mega Colon Syndrome. Many of you have commented on how fat her tummy looked in recent photos. That was actually the progression of this disease. She in fact was almost all bones when I petted her back and hips while her stomach was bloated and large.
Some of you know how Sugie came to live in Bunnyville, but for those that don't, this is the story.

Sugie came from the most awful and horrible place. A man was raising lots of bunnies in his backyard to sell to pet stores and to sell as meat. He had over 100 some rabbits that kept breeding over and over again. The rabbits began to dig out under his fence and he got tired of trying to catch them, so he would sit on his front porch with his shotgun and shoot them as they tried to get away. Sugie was one that managed to get away and was found by a neighbor. She was pregnant at the time.

The people that captured Sugie called some folks that lived close to me. They came and got all the bunnies from the man. Then they carried them to their home, where there were lots and lots of bunnies out in horrible hutches in 100 degree heat. They placed the bunnies male, female, male, female in the hutches so they wouldn't fight. However, the males kept spraying Sugie from either side with urine to "mark" her. Her beautiful white fur was stained yellow and orange from all the urine. She sat there miserably covered in pee, in a hutch with that dreadful and painful wire floor, in 100 degree heat and had given birth to the babies who were now in a separate hutch.

I had just lost my Chloe bunny from a fluke problem called, root rot and was really not ready to get another bunny as my heart was so broken. But Razzy missed Chloe so much and my friend, Paula with Cape Fear House Rabbit Society, sent me the above picture of Sugie. One look at that scared, sad and pitiful face, I had to go get her.

My friend, Michelle (Captain as I call her) went with me. We were both on the verge of tears when we saw Sugie's living conditions and I about passed out when the man got her out of the pen by lifting her by the scruff of the neck!! WRONG!! I grabbed Sugie and she immediately snuggled into my neck. Captain was freaking out too and kept telling me to " just get to the car Shell, get to the car!" I noticed some very strange looking poop in the cage, but all I could think about was getting Sugie out of there.

I had her spayed and then introduced her to Razzy for the bonding process. You can read about it in the August of 2009 archive if you would like. It's a pretty funny story. (That's Razzy in the photo, not Harrington)

As Sugie got older, her poop started getting worse and worse. Her belly also started to get bigger and bigger. All of it stemming from what I later found out to be Mega Colon disease, which is a genetic disorder that probably came from all the inbreeding of bunnies that the stupid man did. Sugie has had two other hospital stays since the one yesterday. I have spent well over $3,000.00 on vet bills and medications, which I'm not complaining about, as I believe in being a responsible parent. But, I have sell a lot of patterns and embroidery floss to pay for these bills. My friend, Paula, told me that Sugie's life expectancy would not be good. In fact, if she made it be three years old, it would be amazing as most bunnies with this disease don't. Sugie was almost three.

Sunday afternoon I made her a new cardboard cottage and got her a fresh blanky. Her old cottage was suffering some structural damage from a bad renovation. ;)  Sugie adored her little cottages and loved to fix her blankies just so. She would stretch out in there and lick her front paws to show her happiness.

I will miss kissing her soft cheekies and telling her how pretty she was.

I will miss watching her take a nap with ther footies stretched out behind her.

I will miss her loving, sweet heart but most of all, I will just miss her presence in Bunnyville.

Harrington is now acting EBO (executive bunny officer) of Bunnyville. He is not very happy about it as ya'll know he would rather party in the poo poo bucket. However, we know that Easter is coming and lots of adults will make irrational and poor decisions to purchase bunnies as Easter gifts for their kiddo's instead of purchasing chocolate or stuffed toys. The children will grow tired of the bunnies in a few weeks and the parents will not want to have one more responsibility to their already over-committed lives. So like it happens every single Spring, hundreds of domestic bunnies will either be set free into neighborhoods where they will die because they don't know how to live in the wild, or they will end up in rescues waiting for a forever home where someone will love them and care for them no matter what.

Harrington, Sugie, Razzy, Chloe, and Rosey were all Easter bunnies that were no longer wanted. They all found their way to me and even though I never really know how long I will have with them or what illness they may have, my life is always better because of them. Love is patient and kind...

Love never ends.

xx, shell and harrington

Shell I am so glad you rescued Sugie at least she enjoyed some of her life how anyone can be cruel to an animal is beyond me. Both of my dogs are rescue dogs, Lady was rescued along with her sisters and brothers because the owner was going to drown them and Sam was in a stray dog centre in a cage so small he couldn't even turn around properly in it. We will never be able to save all the mistreated animals but you have to be proud that you do your bit. Big Hugs Linda x

I'm sorry Shell. I understand your loss and all I can say is that she was so fortunate to have what time she had left with you. You are a sweet girl to help these rabbits that are treated so badly by others. I've rescued all my life and although it is the hardest thing say good-bye, I know that at least they knew they were eventually loved beyond words. Enjoy your sweet memories of her. I wish I was there to give you a big hug. Deb

Shell, thank you for rescuing Sugie and giving her a wonderful and safe home. My heart goes out to you and to Harrington.....it will be hard not to see her sweet little buns. This is a lovely tribute to her and to you for being so loving and thoughtful!! Of course I am bawling like a baby but that is bunny love for you....you blog has given me such insight into the treatment of rabbits and when my grandchildren come at Easter, we will make a donation to the SPCA in honour of Sugie....

Dear Shell:
Our lives are all enriched by the love and adoration of our pets whose lives are all too short. I'm so sad at the loss of another of your beautiful pets. You made their time on earth better, and in time, your love for each other will guide you back together over the Bridge.

Know that your pain is shared by all of us who love you. I'll say prayers that the sadness you feel as you grieve for Sugie will soon be replaced with only your happy memories of her.
Love always,
Donna

Aw, Shell and Harrington,

I am so sorry. I will miss my chats with Sugie.

I was grown and gone and remember when my sister had a rabbit. Our parents were not responsible pet owners at all. I would get sickened when I saw the condition that bunny had to live in. I've seen far too many breeders as you've described as well. And I too am completely against puppies for Christmas, bunnies and chicks for Easter. It is quite sad!

Hugs to you.

Shell, and of course Harrington,
I am sitting here with tears streaming down my face (at work no less). I am so, so, so sorry for your loss. As a bunny rescuer I can understand your pain and wish there was something I could do to help you fill that awful void that just appeared in your lives. It's hard to look on the bright side at times like this, but Sugie had a wonderful life after she came to live with you. I do believe bunnies from horrible, awful, disgusting backgrounds like Sugie and like 2 of my 4 bunnies really appreciate their new homes where they are loved. I'm finding it hard to articulate here as I'm so upset by both the loss of Sugie and hearing about her start (along with countless other bunnies who didn't escape). I only hope you'll find yourself able to adopt another rabbit, not to take Sugie's place as noone can do that, but to keep Harrington company in Bunnyville. There needs to be more education about the way we buy pets, in this country too. I'm doing my best as a one-woman campaign to encourage the rescue of rabbits rather than perpetuating the pet shop horror, I know you feel the same.
Love and kisses to you both.

It makes me feel very angry to hear about irresponsibly people not looking after animals properly!

My heart goes out to you Shell at this sad time.
Gentle warm hugs to you and Harrington. I will really miss seeing Sugie buns on your blog.

Oh Shell, my heart is breaking wide open for you. Two in one year is more than anyone should ever have to bear. I'm sitting in my office fighting back tears, but I really lost it when I saw the pictures of Razzy and Sugie.

Shell, you gave her a wonderful couple of years, which is all anybunny really wants I think. She was comfortable, had everything she could want, and was made more comfortable than she had ever been in her life by safe, sanitary conditions and a proper diet. She wouldn't have made it as long as she did without having found you.

Sugie and Razzy are binkying free at the bridge, snuggling once more, having a bunny party with Freckles, Ginny, Baxter, Patch, Nutmeg and PAtches, Sage, and all of the little beloveds we've lost recently (my goodness, so many
:( ) They are reminiscing together about how wonderful their last humans were to them, how they had everything they wanted, as they do now, and how wonderful it felt to feel love and compassion for the first time.

Shell, I don't know how else to offer my condolences except to say it again, my heart is breaking wide open for you. Please send my love to Harrington. Let me know if you need anything.

How can a story be so sad and so happy and then sad again? I cringed when I read how Sugie came to be your rabbit, and then I felt sick.
Sugie was indeed a beautiful rabbit and I can imagine how you will missher, and her soft cheeks. And her footsies - so darn cute!
Love heals doesn't it, them and us, and while there is certainly great sadnesses, there are also great happinesses. You made each other happy and neither you nor Sugie were the same for having come together.
A great big hug for and for the new EBO.

awww...I am at the verge of tears and I have never met you or your bunnies in person. I love reading your posts and seeing your bunny pictures. I have a bunny named Flopsy that helps keep me company in my sewing room. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Shell, I couldn't even finish reading this post because I'm on the verge of tears :o( I'm so sad for your loss. Sugie sounded like a wonderful bunny and she was very lucky to have found a wonderful home with you.

I lost my first bunny, Scooter, to coccidia. He was sick for years but I didn't mind washing his bum or changing his shavings all those extra times. The joy he gave me was worth more than what I could give back.

((((HUGS))))

Hi Michelle - I am so sorry to read about Sugie. It doesn't seem that long ago that you lost Razzy. I had two bunnies that both had illnesses. The money wasn't the worst part of it, it was losing such lovely animals in such a short time span. I love bunnies and know another bun will find it's way to your door to fill your heart and to keep Harrington company. Big hugs for you!

Thank the Lord He sent you to get her, because you truly loved her. I know i'll miss her too, I feel as if I knew her a little bit, just from reading about her on your blog. She had quite a personality that little one :) Hugs to you sweetie...karen

Bless Sugie on her way to the Bridge! Godspeed, Sugie! Enjoy the clover and dandelions. We'll miss you. I am so glad your tummy is all better, baby girl! Remember to say your prayers for your mommy because she'll be missing you and needs to know you're happy and comfy now in your new cardboard castle! Love to you, Sweet Girl! Take care, Shell. I know no words to say right now, and you seem stronger than I am when one of my bunnies crosses over, so just know I'm thinking and praying for you.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I've been reading your blog for a while because I miss my bunnies. I had house rabbits for years and just lost my last one a few months ago. Poor Sugie--I'll be thinking of you. She had a good home.

Dear Shell;
Bless your heart for rescuing those little sweethearts and being such a loving mom to them. I fell into rescuing cats (as my neighborhood is full of abandoned ones)and they mean the world to me (even though I am officially a "dog" person)!
Little Sugie was very blessed to have you in her final months. She knew love and a gentle touch thanks to you and I know she appreciated the difference you made in her life!
May the richest blessings be yours this Easter and much joy in remembering your darling Sugie!

I'm so sorry for your loss ((HUGS)) it is never easy to lose those precious furry family members, but I hope you find some comfort in the fact that you made a REAL and wonderful difference in Sugie's life! I can't stand those heartless backyard breeders, I think they should all be hung from a tree and tortured for what they do!

I am so sorry to hear your sweet bunny Sugie. You were a great bunny Mom for the remainder of her life and she had a good home. She was loved and I'm sure she knew it! Love to you dear. As a former bunny owner (or person that was formerly owned by a bunny or two) I understand the love...they are such fun.

Aw Shell, I'm so sorry. My heart really hurts for you, I know the pain too well and still so fresh from losing Patches and Nutmeg. Sugie was so sweet and beautiful and I understand your feelings of "just missing her presence". She'll be around still, I have no doubt. All of our babies are on the other side having a great big party and living it up. We'll see them again. Thinking of you Shell.
